The Night the Lights Went Out in Moore County

A controversial drag show prompted dueling protests in downtown Southern Pines on Dec. 3, 2022. Many believe the event is somehow connected to pair of electrical substation attacks that caused most of Moore County to lose power later that evening. Investigators have yet to establish a link between the show and the blackout, but they haven’t ruled it out. 


Pinelake: 10 Years Later

On a windy Sunday morning in March 2009, a burly house painter with a messy beard walked into a Carthage nursing home and killed eight people. This video is part of a special report marking the 10th anniversary of the massacre. 


Firefighters Rescue Motorist From Overturned SUV

After more than an hour of careful maneuvering, firefighters successfully extricated a motorist from an overturned vehicle near U.S. 1 in Vass. This video shows the various steps involved with the complicated rescue.

How a Police Chase Turned Deadly

The Pilot was part of a cohort of news organizations that went to court for the release of dashboard camera footage from a state trooper’s patrol vehicle after a fleeing suspect was killed in a 2018 police chase. This video compiles key moments from the 17 minutes of footage released to the cohort. 


Moore County School Board Dispute

A school board member referenced Nazi propaganda while talking about videos spotlighting local schools, spurring a shouting match during an April 2021 meeting of the Moore County Board of Education.
